A WET DAY IN RUSSELL

Picture
Russell, formerly known as Kororāreka (the place of sweet penguins), was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. It is situated in the Bay of Islands, in the far north of the North Island.
As you stroll round Russell, Bay of Islands today, it's like you’re walking back in time.
In Summer the place is filled with holiday makers and tourists, packing out the accommodation, the restaurants and the beaches. In Winter the place is all but deserted and many of the accommodation businesses close for their own holidays during June and July. On a wet Winter's Sunday, there are few people about, until you pass the Duke of Marlborough Hotel where visitors gather to enjoy social time in the dry.
